Excellence in Teaching Award

GSA Excellence in Teaching Award

The GSA Excellence in Teaching Award (ETA) recognizes graduate students who have shown excellence and gone above and beyond as teachers at UC Santa Barbara. Take the chance to give back and nominate your favorite teaching assistants and associates!  Anyone in the UCSB campus community can nominate a teaching assistant or associate for this award. Last year, we received over one hundred and eighty eligible nominations. Selecting the few winners among this large pool of excellent graduate students was both challenging and inspiring. We very much look forward to receiving this year’s list of nominees.

Nominations are accepted for the following four categories:

  • Lecturers and Teaching Associates (All disciplines)
  • Teaching Assistants (Humanities and Fine Arts)
  • Teaching Assistants (Social Sciences)
  • Teaching Assistants (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

To be eligible, a Teaching Assistant or Teaching Associate must have taught at least one quarter during Spring quarter of the previous academic and Winter quarter of the current academic year. Former winners of the award are not eligible.

For example: For the 2017 award, to be eligible a TA or associate must have taught at least one quarter during Spring 2016, Summer 2016, Fall 2016, or Winter 2017. Former winners of the award are not eligible.

Graduate Student Association Excellence in Teaching Award 2014

Results of the 2014 Graduate Student Association Excellence in Teaching Award

In 2014, after reviewing a pool of 116 eligible nominees, and a final submission pool of 57 candidates, the GSA Excellence in Teaching Award Committee chose four winners and named four honorable mentions. The committee, which consisted of 10 graduate students, established and followed a set of guiding principles for teaching excellence, including: How do the teacher’s ESCI scores compare against others in their department, and against others who taught that class? Does the teacher’s teaching philosophy indicate that they are student-focused? Do the candidate’s letters of recommendation complement and corroborate the candidate’s teaching philosophy? Does the candidate’s CV indicate professional development and a range of teaching?

The GSA is grateful to the members of the award committee for contributing their time, energy, and wisdom to the task of reviewing the applications. Congratulations to all of our awardees.
